Independent Living

Independent Living Communities offer seniors an “apartment style” setting and limited assistance. Many Independent Living communities have a shared dining room where most of the residents go to for all their meals.

Depending on state regulations and each community, there may or may not be limited care services available for the residents. Sometimes in a retirement housing community, residents are allowed to hire private care-giving services if they have needs for “hands-on” care. Overall, this apartment style setting is more for active seniors who may benefit from increased socialization.

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living is a great option when you want community, care and supervision. If you are looking for supervision, consistent support and a community where you or your loved one can thrive yet still have their independence, then an assisted living facility may just be the perfect option for you or your loved one’s needs. Assisted livings are equipped to provide you with assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), like bathing, dressing and toileting, while also providing a home-like setting with activities, outings and a thriving social community.

Assisted Living communities may also provide transportation to doctor’s offices, events, grocery stores, or the mall. An assisted living residence is more costly than Independent / Retirement communities but usually less than memory care.

Memory Care

Memory care is a special kind of care provided to those with middle to late stage dementia or Alzheimer’s. It involves creating a structured environment that has set schedules and routines in place to create a stress-free lifestyle. There are safety features in place to ensure the health of a senior, and helpful programs designed to assist with cognitive skills. Activities focusing on memory recall from past experiences are integrated into daily activities.

When a senior is dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia, they tend to require expert care, along with a comforting environment that is safe and secure. A caretaker may not be able to give a senior the care they need at all hours of the day, and most homes are not built to accommodate the special needs of those with memory loss. That is why families turn to memory care communities, which provide the necessary expert care in a safe environment and supportive staff available around the clock.

Residents who are good candidates for memory care usually are already residing in an assisted living environment who have become forgetful in performing their activities of daily living or who have begun wondering.

One of the goals of memory care is to help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s or dementia while also enabling a senior to feel purpose, a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment on a daily basis.
